Which horse won the first Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1920?
Answer
Comrade
Answer
Comrade
Comrade won the first Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1920.
The inaugural race was staged at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris after the First World War. Comrade, a three-year-old colt trained by Herbert-William Williamson, defeated fellow French runner Pomme de Terre in the first running.
The race was created to celebrate peace and help restore French racing after the disruption caused by the war. It is run over 2,400 metres and is open to thoroughbreds aged three and older, with separate weight conditions for age and sex.
The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is commonly called the Arc. It became one of Europe’s most prestigious flat races and has attracted leading horses from many countries. The race was not held in 1939 or 1940 because of the Second World War, when Longchamp was unavailable for normal competition.
