Which horse won the first Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1924?
Answer
Red Splash
Answer
Red Splash
Red Splash won the first Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1924.
The inaugural Gold Cup was run at Cheltenham Racecourse on the New Course. Red Splash was trained by Fred Withington and ridden by Dick Rees. The race was originally staged as a steeplechase over a distance of about 2 miles and 5 furlongs.
The Cheltenham Gold Cup later became Britain’s premier championship race for staying National Hunt horses. Its modern distance is approximately 3 miles, 2½ furlongs, and competitors must jump a series of fences before finishing on the uphill run-in.
The event was not held during the Second World War from 1943 through 1945. Golden Miller later became the first horse to win the Gold Cup five times, from 1932 to 1936. That achievement is separate from Red Splash’s distinction as the inaugural winner.
