Which horse won the 2011 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse?

The story behind the answer

Dunaden won the 2011 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse.

The French-trained Dunaden was ridden by Christophe Lemaire and trained by Mikel Delzangles. He defeated Red Cadeaux in a very close finish, with the official margin recorded as a nose. The result made Dunaden the first horse trained in France to win the Melbourne Cup.

The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous staying race and is run over 3,200 metres on the first Tuesday in November. Dunaden’s victory was followed by another major international success in the Hong Kong Vase later that year. Red Cadeaux, the runner-up, became a much-loved Melbourne Cup horse after placing again in 2013.
