Mine That Bird won the 2009 Kentucky Derby after starting at odds of 50 to 1.
Ridden by Calvin Borel and trained by Chip Woolley, Mine That Bird came from near the back of the field before making a remarkable move along the inside rail. He won by 6¾ lengths, one of the largest margins in Derby history. Pioneerof the Nile finished second.
Mine That Bird was bred in Kentucky and had already raced in Canada before the Derby. His victory is remembered as one of the race’s greatest upsets. The horse later finished second in the Preakness Stakes and third in the Belmont Stakes, narrowly missing a chance to challenge for the American Triple Crown.
