Which horse won the 2000 Kentucky Derby despite starting from post position 15?
Answer
Fusaichi Pegasus
Answer
Fusaichi Pegasus
Fusaichi Pegasus won the 2000 Kentucky Derby despite starting from post position 15.
Fusaichi Pegasus won the 126th Kentucky Derby on May 6, 2000, at Churchill Downs. Ridden by Kent Desormeaux and trained by Neil Drysdale, he started from post 15 and defeated Aptitude by 1½ lengths over the 1¼-mile dirt course.
His victory made him the first favorite to win the Derby since Spectacular Bid in 1979. He was also the first Kentucky Derby winner owned by Fusao Sekiguchi, whose name forms the first part of the horse’s unusual name.
Post 15 is not the same as the far outside post in a 20-horse Derby field. That distinction matters because longshots from the extreme outside have won the race, including Mine That Bird from post 8 in 2009 and Big Brown from post 20 in 2008.
