Which horse won the 1964 Kentucky Derby and became the first Canadian-bred winner?
Answer
Northern Dancer
Answer
Northern Dancer
Northern Dancer won the 1964 Kentucky Derby and became the first Canadian-bred winner.
Bred in Ontario by E. P. Taylor, Northern Dancer was a small but exceptionally talented colt. He was trained by Horatio Luro and ridden by Bill Hartack when he won the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
Northern Dancer also won the Preakness Stakes that year, but he finished third in the Belmont Stakes. Despite missing the American Triple Crown, he became one of the most influential sires in modern Thoroughbred breeding.
His descendants include champions such as Nijinsky, Sadler’s Wells and Danzig. The horse’s Canadian breeding is the key distinction: Nijinsky was also Canadian-bred but did not win the Kentucky Derby.
