Whirlaway won the 1941 American Triple Crown and the Travers Stakes.
The chestnut colt captured the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes in 1941. He also won the Travers Stakes at Saratoga, becoming the first horse to complete the American Triple Crown and Travers double in the same year.
Whirlaway was trained by Ben Jones and ridden by Eddie Arcaro, who later became one of the most successful jockeys in American racing history. His long, flowing forelock helped give him the nickname “Mr. Longtail.”
The Travers is often called the “Mid-Summer Derby,” but it is not part of the Triple Crown. It is a Grade 1 race for three-year-olds held at Saratoga. Whirlaway’s achievement is therefore a separate four-race accomplishment, not a fourth Triple Crown leg.
