Which horse was the first to win the Grand National three times?

The story behind the answer

Red Rum was the first horse to win the Grand National three times.

Red Rum won the Aintree steeplechase in 1973, 1974, and 1977. He remains the only horse to win the race three times, while his two consecutive victories in 1973 and 1974 were also a rare achievement. His third victory came after he finished second in both 1975 and 1976.

The Grand National is a demanding National Hunt race over fences at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. Red Rum was trained by Ginger McCain and ridden by jockey Tommy Stack for his 1977 victory; Brian Fletcher rode him in his first two wins. His 1973 success was especially dramatic because he caught Crisp close to the finish.

Red Rum became one of Britain’s best-known racehorses, not simply because of his wins but also because of his longevity and repeated appearances in the race. Tiger Roll later matched two Grand National victories, but he did not equal Red Rum’s record of three.
