Which horse holds the fastest official Kentucky Derby time?

The story behind the answer

Secretariat holds the fastest official Kentucky Derby time, winning in 1:59.40 in 1973.

The performance came during Secretariat’s American Triple Crown season. Ridden by Ron Turcotte and trained by Lucien Laurin, he won the 99th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs by 2½ lengths over Sham.

Secretariat’s time was the first Kentucky Derby result under two minutes and remains the race record. The mark is often discussed alongside the unofficial hand-timed times from earlier editions, which is why some historical lists may appear inconsistent. Modern timing standards and later track records are generally compared using the officially recorded figure.

The Kentucky Derby is run over 1¼ miles, or 10 furlongs, for three-year-old thoroughbreds. Secretariat also set stakes records in the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, making his 1973 Triple Crown one of the most celebrated campaigns in racing history.
