Which horse defeated War Admiral in the famous 1938 Pimlico match race?

The story behind the answer

Seabiscuit defeated War Admiral in the famous 1938 Pimlico match race.

The contest took place on 1 November 1938 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Seabiscuit, a popular older horse, met War Admiral, the reigning American Triple Crown winner. Seabiscuit won by four lengths after setting the pace and completing the 1 3/16-mile race in 1:56 3/5.

The race was promoted as a meeting between two very different champions. War Admiral was smaller than many expected but exceptionally accomplished, while Seabiscuit had developed from an underperforming early-career horse into a major winner under trainer Tom Smith and jockey Red Pollard.

The match race became a landmark in American sporting history and later inspired the 2003 film Seabiscuit. It is sometimes called the “Race of the Century,” although that nickname has also been applied to other major races.
