Which horse completed the English Triple Crown in 1970?

The story behind the answer

Nijinsky completed the English Triple Crown in 1970.

Trained by Vincent O’Brien and ridden by Lester Piggott, Nijinsky won the 2,000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the St Leger in the same season. He was bred in Canada by E. P. Taylor and raced for Charles W. Engelhard Jr.

Nijinsky became the first horse since 1935 to win all three English Triple Crown races. His achievement is especially demanding because the races test different distances: the 2,000 Guineas is a mile, the Derby is about 1½ miles, and the St Leger is 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 132 yards.

After his racing career, Nijinsky became a highly influential stallion. His name is often written with the parenthetical “horse” because the Russian-born ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky is also a famous historical figure. Nijinsky’s 1970 campaign remains the last completed English Triple Crown by a colt.
