Which horse became the first winner of the English Triple Crown, completing it in 1853?
Answer
West Australian
Answer
West Australian
West Australian became the first winner of the English Triple Crown by completing it in 1853.
The colt won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Epsom Derby, and the St Leger Stakes in the same season. Those three races later became known collectively as the English Triple Crown for colts. West Australian was bred by Lord Exeter and trained by John Scott, with jockey Frank Butler riding him in the classic victories.
His achievement was not originally promoted under the modern phrase “Triple Crown.” The term became established later, but West Australian was retrospectively recognized as the first horse to complete the sequence. The 2,000 Guineas and Derby are run in the spring, while the St Leger takes place in September, making the feat a demanding test over different distances and seasons.
West Australian’s accomplishment helped define the idea of a British three-year-old champion. Later winners included Gladiateur, Ormonde, and Nijinsky, but successful completions have always been rare.
