J.K. Rowling received an OBE in 2001 for services to children’s literature.
The honor was announced in the 2000 Queen’s Birthday Honours and formally conferred in 2001. OBE stands for Officer of the Order of the British Empire, one of the ranks in the UK honours system. Rowling received the distinction after the extraordinary success of the early Harry Potter books.
The OBE is sometimes confused with an MBE or CBE because all are grades within the same order. Rowling later received other recognitions, including the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award in 2010 and the Companion of Honour in 2017. The 2001 honor specifically recognized her contribution to children’s literature.
