Gryffindor is the Hogwarts house associated with the colors scarlet and gold in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.
Gryffindor was founded by Godric Gryffindor, one of Hogwarts' four founders. The house is traditionally associated with courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry. Its emblem is a lion, and its students live in a tower common room reached through a portrait entrance.
Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger are among the best-known Gryffindor students. Their house competes against Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff for the House Cup, which rewards academic achievement, good conduct, and success in school competitions.
The colors can be confused because each house has a distinctive palette. Slytherin uses green and silver, Ravenclaw is blue and bronze in the books, and Hufflepuff is yellow and black. The films use blue and silver for Ravenclaw instead.
