Which Hogwarts house did J.K. Rowling establish as Harry Potter’s house?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling established Gryffindor as Harry Potter’s Hogwarts house.

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the Sorting Hat places Harry in Gryffindor shortly after he begins attending Hogwarts. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are sorted into the same house, creating the central trio of the series. Gryffindor is associated particularly with courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry.

The house was founded by Godric Gryffindor, one of Hogwarts’ four medieval founders. Its colors are scarlet and gold, and its emblematic animal is the lion. Minerva McGonagall serves as the house’s head of house during much of Harry’s time at school.

Harry’s choice also matters to the story. The Sorting Hat considers placing him in Slytherin, but Harry strongly resists that possibility. His placement in Gryffindor helps establish the series’ recurring contrast between personal choices and inherited reputation.
