Which hobbit is the main character of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins is the main hobbit character of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. He inherits the One Ring from his uncle Bilbo and accepts the task of carrying it from the Shire toward its destruction.

Frodo begins the story as a relatively private resident of Hobbiton, but the Ring makes him a central target of Sauron’s servants. At the Council of Elrond, he volunteers to take the Ring to Mordor, beginning the quest that drives the novel’s main plot.

Samwise Gamgee accompanies Frodo and becomes his closest companion, but Sam is not the story’s Ring-bearer for most of the journey. Bilbo is the earlier Ring-bearer and the protagonist of The Hobbit, which can cause confusion between the two books.

Frodo’s journey ends with the Ring destroyed in Mount Doom, although Tolkien presents the physical and emotional consequences of the quest as lasting. His role combines heroic responsibility with the limits of ordinary endurance.
