Which historical setting is depicted in Assassin's Creed Origins?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Origins is set in ancient Egypt.

The game takes place primarily during the first century BCE, near the end of the Ptolemaic period. Its protagonist, Bayek of Siwa, is a Medjay who becomes involved in the origins of the Hidden Ones, the organization that later develops into the Assassin Brotherhood.

Players can explore major locations such as Alexandria, Memphis, Cyrene, and the Giza plateau. The story also features historical figures including Cleopatra VII, Julius Caesar, and Ptolemy XIII.

The title is called Origins because it presents a fictional account of how the Assassin tradition began. It should not be confused with Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which is set in ancient Greece, or Assassin's Creed Mirage, which is set in ninth-century Baghdad. Origins was released in 2017 and introduced a more role-playing-focused structure to the main series.
