The main setting of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is the Caribbean.

The game takes place during the Golden Age of Piracy, mainly in the early 18th century. Its open world includes ports and islands such as Havana, Nassau, and Kingston, allowing the player to sail between locations aboard Edward Kenway's ship, the Jackdaw.

Edward Kenway is a Welsh privateer who becomes involved in the conflict between the Assassins and Templars. Unlike earlier games, Black Flag places unusually strong emphasis on naval travel, ship combat, exploration, and piracy.

The Caribbean setting should not be confused with the Italian Renaissance locations of Assassin's Creed II or the American frontier in Assassin's Creed III. Although the game includes fictionalized characters and events, it also features historical figures associated with piracy, including Blackbeard and Benjamin Hornigold.
