Which historical politician does Tommy Shelby confront in season 5?

The story behind the answer

Tommy Shelby confronts the historical politician Sir Oswald Mosley in season 5 of Peaky Blinders.

Mosley was a real British politician who became associated with fascist politics in the 1930s. In the series, he is played by Sam Claflin and appears as an ambitious Member of Parliament whose political movement attracts Tommy’s attention and suspicion. The storyline culminates in Tommy planning an assassination attempt during a fascist rally.

The show’s Mosley is fictionalised, but his political background and fascist associations draw on the real Sir Oswald Mosley, founder of the British Union of Fascists. Tommy’s encounter is sometimes confused with his earlier contact with Winston Churchill, another real politician who appears in the series. Churchill, however, is not the central political antagonist Tommy confronts in season 5.
