Who plays Freddie Thorne, Ada Shelby's husband in series 1? Iddo Goldberg plays Freddie Thorne.
Freddie is a Birmingham communist, a former soldier and an old friend of Tommy Shelby. His political commitments and past with Tommy place him at the intersection of the show's family drama, working-class politics and postwar tensions.
He marries Ada Shelby after she becomes pregnant, despite Tommy's hostility toward the relationship. Their son is Karl Thorne, a name that deliberately reflects Freddie's communist beliefs. Freddie also helps the Peaky Blinders during the confrontation with Billy Kimber's men.
Goldberg's role is limited mainly to the first series, and Freddie's absence afterward can cause confusion about the character's fate. The second series reveals that Freddie died between the two series, reportedly from “pestilence,” generally understood as a reference to the Spanish flu. Goldberg later became known for roles in Salem, Supergirl and Snowpiercer.
