Which historical organization does the Assassin Brotherhood oppose in Assassin's Creed III?

The story behind the answer

The Templar Order is the historical organization opposed by the Assassin Brotherhood in Assassin's Creed III.

The game's central conflict presents the Assassins and Templars as rival organizations with opposing ideas about human freedom and social control. During the American Revolution storyline, Connor confronts Templar figures whose political and military ambitions intersect with the conflict between the colonies and Britain.

Assassin's Creed III also complicates the rivalry through Haytham Kenway, a Templar and Connor's father. The opening sequence makes Haytham playable before the narrative shifts to Connor, allowing the game to show the conflict from both sides of the family.

The Templar Order should not be confused with Abstergo Industries, its modern-day corporate successor and public-facing organization in the series. The Borgia family is a powerful faction in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, while the Cult of Kosmos belongs primarily to Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
