Which historical figure is portrayed in Martin Scorsese’s Kundun?

The story behind the answer

Martin Scorsese’s Kundun portrays the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.

The 1997 film follows his life from childhood through his recognition as the Dalai Lama, his education, and the Chinese takeover of Tibet. The title “Kundun” is a Tibetan honorific meaning “presence” or “the presence.”

Kundun was written by Melissa Mathison and stars several actors portraying the Dalai Lama at different ages. The adult role was played by Tenzin Thuthob Tsarong, the Dalai Lama’s grandnephew. The production emphasized Tibetan history, religious practice, and visual symbolism rather than conventional action storytelling.

The film’s subject is sometimes confused with the Panchen Lama, another major Tibetan Buddhist leader. The Dalai Lama is associated with the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism and became an important international advocate for Tibet after leaving the country in 1959.
