KMD released the 1991 hip hop album Mr. Hood.
Mr. Hood was KMD's debut studio album and arrived through Elektra Records in 1991. The group was built around brothers Zev Love X and DJ Subroc, with Onyx the Birthstone Kid completing the best-known lineup. Zev Love X later became widely known as MF Doom, making the album an important early chapter in his career.
KMD formed in Long Beach, New York, in 1988, initially as a graffiti crew and creative collective. The group gained wider attention after appearing on 3rd Bass's “The Gas Face,” which helped lead to a deal with Elektra. Mr. Hood combines playful skits, cartoon and language-tape samples, jazz, funk, and politically pointed lyrics about racism and Black empowerment. Its singles included “Peachfuzz,” “Who Me?,” and “Nitty Gritty,” featuring Brand Nubian. Listeners sometimes confuse Mr. Hood with Black Bastards, KMD's darker follow-up, which was recorded in 1993 but not officially released until 2000.
