Answer
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Answer
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was the Harry Potter title changed for the United States.
The American edition was published as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by Scholastic in 1998. The plot, characters, and chapter structure are essentially the same, but several words and expressions were adjusted for American readers.
Scholastic editor Arthur Levine supported changing “Philosopher” because he thought “Sorcerer” would communicate the book’s magical subject more directly to children in the United States. Rowling agreed to the change, although she later expressed regret about it.
The title refers to the same legendary object: the stone that produces the Elixir of Life and can turn any metal into pure gold. This is why the U.S. and U.K. editions are not different stories, despite their different covers and title wording.
