Which handheld system is Mario Party DS named for?

The story behind the answer

Mario Party DS is named for the Nintendo DS handheld system.

Released in 2007, Mario Party DS was developed by Hudson Soft and published by Nintendo specifically for Nintendo’s dual-screen portable console. The title follows the same naming pattern as other platform-specific entries, such as Mario Party Advance and later Mario Party: Island Tour for Nintendo 3DS.

The Nintendo DS name refers to its distinctive dual-screen design, with the lower display functioning as a touchscreen. Mario Party DS uses those features in several minigames, while its wireless local multiplayer supports up to four human players. It also includes a single-player story mode and a traditional board-game mode.

A common mistake is to treat “DS” as a generic series label or confuse the game with a 3DS release. Mario Party DS is the only Mario Party game released for the original Nintendo DS. It was also Hudson Soft’s final Mario Party title; Mario Party 9, released for Wii in 2012, was developed by NDcube instead.
