The handheld console Sony released in 2004 was the PlayStation Portable, commonly called the PSP.

Sony launched the PSP in Japan on December 12, 2004, followed by North America in March 2005 and Europe in September 2005. It was Sony’s first major handheld gaming system and competed directly with Nintendo’s DS during the seventh generation of video game consoles.

The PSP stood out for its widescreen display, comparatively powerful graphics, Wi-Fi connectivity, music and video playback, and use of Universal Media Discs, or UMDs. It was unusual among handhelds because games and films were distributed on a small optical-disc format rather than cartridges.

The PlayStation Vita was the PSP’s successor, not the 2004 system itself. The Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance were competing Nintendo handhelds. Several PSP revisions followed, including the slimmer PSP-2000, PSP-3000, and download-focused PSP Go.
