Which handbag is Chanel’s iconic quilted bag first introduced in February 1955?

The story behind the answer

Chanel’s iconic quilted handbag introduced in February 1955 is the Chanel 2.55.

The name refers to its launch date: February 1955. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel designed it as a practical shoulder bag, adding a chain strap that allowed the wearer to keep both hands free. Its burgundy lining is traditionally associated with the uniforms worn at the Aubazine convent where Chanel spent part of her childhood.

The 2.55 is often confused with the Chanel Classic Flap. Karl Lagerfeld introduced the Classic Flap in the 1980s, using the interlocking CC turn-lock and a leather-woven chain. The original 2.55 instead uses the rectangular Mademoiselle turn-lock, a reference to Chanel’s never having married.

The bag’s quilted leather surface, chain strap and compact rectangular shape became enduring elements of Chanel’s accessories identity. Chanel has produced variations in materials and colours, but the February 1955 launch is the defining historical fact behind the model’s name.
