Which gymnast scored a perfect 10 at the 1976 Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Nadia Comăneci scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

The Romanian gymnast received the historic score for her uneven-bars routine on July 18, 1976. The Olympic scoreboard was not designed to display 10.00, so it showed “1.00,” creating one of the most famous visual moments in Olympic history.

Comăneci went on to earn seven perfect 10s during the Montreal Games. She won gold in the individual all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam, along with a silver in the team competition and a bronze on floor exercise. She was only 14 years old.

People sometimes confuse her achievement with later perfect-ten gymnasts such as Olga Korbut, Mary Lou Retton, or Simone Biles. Comăneci was the first gymnast to receive a perfect 10 at the Olympic Games; Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim became the second during the same Montreal competition. Modern gymnastics uses an open-ended scoring system rather than the traditional perfect-10 scale.
