Chinese Democracy is the Guns N' Roses album recorded from 1998 to 2007. Its unusually long gestation became one of rock music's most famous production sagas, spanning lineup changes, repeated rewrites, studio moves, and extensive overdubbing.

The project began after the classic lineup fractured in the 1990s. Axl Rose continued working under the Guns N' Roses name while musicians including Robin Finck, Paul “Huge” Tobias, Tommy Stinson, Buckethead, and Bryan “Brain” Mantia contributed at different stages. Many early recordings were revised or replaced before the final track list was chosen.

Although recording is listed as 1998–2007, the album was not released until November 23, 2008. Reports about its cost and delays helped turn Chinese Democracy into a shorthand for an endlessly postponed project; the recording process reportedly cost more than $13 million.

The album is sometimes confused with Use Your Illusion II because both followed major changes in the band's sound and lineup. Chinese Democracy, however, was the first Guns N' Roses studio album released after 1993's The Spaghetti Incident? and the only one led by Rose without Slash and Duff McKagan during its main development.
