Which gulf lies between the Sinai Peninsula and Saudi Arabia?
Answer
Gulf of Aqaba
Answer
Gulf of Aqaba
The gulf lying between the Sinai Peninsula and Saudi Arabia is the Gulf of Aqaba.
Also called the Gulf of Eilat, it is a narrow northern arm of the Red Sea. The gulf is bordered by Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula to the west and Saudi Arabia to the east, while Israel and Jordan occupy its northern shores. The port cities of Eilat and Aqaba give the gulf its two best-known names.
The Gulf of Aqaba occupies a tectonically active zone associated with the Red Sea Rift. Its deep, narrow basin supports coral reefs and marine ecosystems, although those environments face pressure from shipping, coastal development, tourism, and pollution. The gulf’s position also makes it strategically important for access to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
The Gulf of Suez is the most likely source of confusion: it is the other major northern arm of the Red Sea and lies between mainland Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula. The Gulf of Aqaba, by contrast, is east of Sinai and reaches the borders of Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.
