Which large bay of Lake Huron lies entirely in Ontario, Canada? Georgian Bay does.
Georgian Bay occupies Lake Huron’s northeastern side and is entirely within Ontario. It is about 190 kilometres long and 80 kilometres wide, covering roughly 15,000 square kilometres—nearly four-fifths the area of Lake Ontario. Its eastern shoreline is known for exposed Canadian Shield rock, windswept pines and the Thirty Thousand Islands.
The bay has a long Indigenous and exploration history. Anishinaabeg, Huron-Wendat and Petun peoples used its shores and waterways as trading routes. Samuel de Champlain visited the region in 1615, while Royal Navy officer Henry Bayfield gave the bay its current English name in 1822, honoring King George IV.
It is sometimes nicknamed the “sixth Great Lake,” but it remains geographically part of Lake Huron. It is also easily confused with the North Channel, which lies farther northwest between Manitoulin Island and mainland Ontario.
