Which gulf lies between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa?
Answer
Gulf of Aden
Answer
Gulf of Aden
The gulf between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa is the Gulf of Aden.
This deepwater inlet of the Indian Ocean separates Yemen to the north from Djibouti, Somalia, and Somaliland to the south. It connects westward to the Red Sea through the narrow Bab-el-Mandeb strait and opens eastward into the Arabian Sea.
The gulf takes its name from Aden, Yemen's historic port city. Its position makes it a major maritime corridor: ships traveling between the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal pass through it, including vessels carrying Persian Gulf oil. The Gulf of Aden was also an important ancient trade route linking Egypt, Arabia, East Africa, and India.
A common mix-up is the Red Sea, which lies northwest of the Gulf of Aden. The two waterways are connected, but they are separate geographic features.
