Answer
Gulf of Bothnia
Which gulf lies between Sweden and Finland? The answer is the Gulf of Bothnia.
The Gulf of Bothnia is the northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea, positioned between Sweden’s eastern coast and Finland’s western coast. It is divided into the Bothnian Bay in the north, the Kvarken strait in the middle and the Bothnian Sea in the south. The cities and ports around it support forestry, mining, steelmaking and shipping.
The gulf is about 725 kilometres long and has an average depth of roughly 60 metres. Its waters can freeze during winter, and icebreakers may be needed for months at a time. The region is also rising gradually because the land is rebounding after the weight of Ice Age glaciers was removed.
A frequent mistake is answering “Baltic Sea.” That is the larger sea containing the Gulf of Bothnia. The Gulf of Finland is a separate Baltic inlet farther south, between Finland and Estonia, with Russia at its eastern end.
