Answer
Gulf of California
Answer
Gulf of California
The only place where the vaquita porpoise is found is the Gulf of California.
The vaquita, or Phocoena sinus, is endemic to the northern Gulf of California in Mexico. Also called the Sea of Cortez, this gulf separates Mexico's Baja California Peninsula from the mainland. Vaquitas inhabit shallow, murky coastal waters, generally less than 150 meters deep.
They are the smallest living cetaceans, reaching about 150 centimeters in length for females and 140 centimeters for males. Despite their compact size, they are fully marine mammals that breathe air at the surface. Their extremely small range makes the species particularly vulnerable to local threats.
Vaquitas are critically endangered, with accidental entanglement in gillnets—especially nets used in the illegal totoaba fishery—as the main danger. The Gulf of California is sometimes confused with the Gulf of Mexico, but they are separate bodies of water on opposite sides of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula.
