Which gulf in the Baltic Sea lies between Latvia and Estonia?
Answer
Gulf of Riga
Answer
Gulf of Riga
The gulf in the Baltic Sea between Latvia and Estonia is the Gulf of Riga.
Also called the Bay of Riga or Gulf of Livonia, this large Baltic sub-basin is bordered by Latvia to the south and west and Estonia to the north. The Latvian capital, Riga, sits at its southern end, while Estonian coastal cities include Pärnu and Kuressaare. Estonia’s Saaremaa Island partly shields the gulf from the open Baltic, with the Irbe Strait providing the main connection.
The Gulf of Riga is relatively shallow and receives freshwater from rivers including the Daugava, Pärnu, Lielupe, Gauja, and Salaca. Like the wider Baltic Sea, it is brackish rather than fully oceanic because substantial river runoff mixes with limited saltwater exchange.
Its low salinity and partial enclosure mean that much of the gulf can freeze during severe winters. The Gulf of Finland lies farther north, between Estonia and Finland, while the Gulf of Bothnia occupies the northern Baltic between Sweden and Finland.
