Which gulf contains the world's largest offshore oil field, Safaniya?

The story behind the answer

The gulf containing Safaniya, the world's largest offshore oil field, is the Persian Gulf. The field lies off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia, about 265 kilometres north of Dhahran, and is operated by Saudi Aramco.

Safaniya was discovered in 1951 and began producing oil in 1957. Its reservoir is primarily a Cretaceous sandstone formation, with hydrocarbons generated through the region’s extensive Jurassic and Cretaceous petroleum systems. The field is an anticline, a folded geological structure that trapped oil beneath sealing rock layers.

Safaniya is associated with heavy crude oil and has estimated reserves of roughly 37 billion barrels of oil, along with substantial natural-gas reserves. At full capability, it has been able to produce more than 1.2 million barrels per day, although actual output varies with operating conditions and national production policy.

The North Sea and Gulf of Mexico also contain major offshore petroleum provinces, which can make the options seem plausible. Safaniya’s defining geographic clue is Saudi Arabia’s Persian Gulf coast.
