Which Gujarati newspaper did Mahatma Gandhi launch in 1919?

The story behind the answer

Mahatma Gandhi launched the Gujarati newspaper Navajivan in 1919.

Navajivan, meaning “new life,” was founded in Ahmedabad and became an important vehicle for Gandhi’s political and social ideas. It was published in Gujarati, allowing Gandhi to communicate directly with a broad readership in western India. The publication supported noncooperation, swadeshi, khadi, and campaigns against social discrimination.

Gandhi also edited or wrote for several other periodicals, which can make their histories easy to mix up. Young India was an English-language journal associated with him, while Harijan was launched later, in 1933, to discuss social reform and the removal of untouchability.

Navajivan was more than a news publication: it helped connect Gandhi’s arguments with the practical work of India’s nationalist movement. Its name also became associated with Gandhi’s publishing activities in Ahmedabad.
