Which Greco-Egyptian deity combined Anubis with the Greek god Hermes?

The story behind the answer

Hermanubis was the Greco-Egyptian deity that combined Anubis with the Greek god Hermes. The syncretic figure emerged as Egyptian and Greek religious traditions interacted, especially during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Anubis and Hermes had overlapping roles as guides and mediators. Anubis escorted the dead and participated in funerary judgment, while Hermes could act as a messenger and guide of souls in Greek tradition. Combining their identities created a deity intelligible to worshippers familiar with both religious systems.

Hermanubis was commonly represented with a human body and a canine or jackal head, preserving Anubis’s visual identity. He should not be confused with Serapis, another major Hellenistic religious creation associated especially with Osiris and Apis. Syncretism did not erase the older gods; it gave them new interpretations in multicultural settings.
