Which Grand Seiko watch, launched in 1960, established the brand’s name and pursuit of high precision?

The story behind the answer

The Grand Seiko 3180, launched in 1960, was the first watch to carry the Grand Seiko name and established the collection’s precision-focused identity.

Seiko created Grand Seiko to demonstrate that a Japanese mechanical watch could meet demanding standards for accuracy, finishing, and reliability. The first model used the manually wound calibre 3180, and its performance was advertised as meeting a high level of chronometric precision for the period.

The 3180 was produced at the Suwa Seikosha factory, while later Grand Seiko development involved both Suwa and Daini Seikosha. The collection eventually became known for highly polished cases, precise indices, and movements designed specifically for accuracy.

The 44GS, introduced in 1967, is often discussed because it established the famous Grand Seiko Style of case design. It was not the first Grand Seiko watch, however. That distinction belongs to the 1960 Grand Seiko 3180.
