Which Grand Prix was the first to be held under floodlights?

The story behind the answer

The Singapore Grand Prix was the first Formula One Grand Prix to be held under floodlights. Its inaugural night race took place on 28 September 2008 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

The event was created as a spectacular street race through Singapore, with a lighting system designed to illuminate the entire 5.067-kilometre circuit. Nearly 1,600 projectors were positioned around the track, allowing drivers to race at night while maintaining visibility comparable to a daytime event. The schedule also helped television audiences in Europe watch the race at more convenient local times.

The 2008 race was won by Fernando Alonso for Renault, while Felipe Massa started from pole position. The result later became controversial because Renault team officials had ordered Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash deliberately, triggering a safety car. Singapore’s race should not be confused with earlier non-Formula One events held there; the 2008 event was the first night race in the F1 World Championship.
