Which Gran Turismo game introduced the B-Spec mode?

The story behind the answer

Gran Turismo 4 introduced B-Spec mode. Released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004 and 2005 depending on region, it added a second way to participate in races alongside the traditional A-Spec driving mode.

In B-Spec mode, the player acts as a racing crew chief rather than directly driving every corner. They can issue instructions such as increasing or reducing aggression, asking the driver to pass, and managing pit stops according to tyre wear and fuel use. This made the mode especially useful for long endurance events.

Gran Turismo 4 also allowed B-Spec races to run at an accelerated speed, reducing the real-time commitment required for lengthy competitions. The mode was not simply an automatic replay: the player had to monitor the driver’s skill, pace, and race conditions, while poor instructions could lead to mistakes or lost positions.

The answer is sometimes confused with Gran Turismo 5 or Gran Turismo 6 because B-Spec continued into later games. Its debut, however, was in Gran Turismo 4, alongside other major additions such as Driving Missions and Photo Mode.
