Which Gran Turismo game first introduced dynamic time and weather?

The story behind the answer

Gran Turismo 5 was the first Gran Turismo game to introduce dynamic time and weather effects.

Released for PlayStation 3 in 2010, Gran Turismo 5 expanded the series beyond static racing conditions. On supported circuits, races could reflect changing daylight and weather, making visibility, track grip, and strategy more important than in earlier entries.

The feature was part of a broader push toward realism. Gran Turismo 5 also introduced the franchise’s first substantial mechanical and external damage modeling, licensed NASCAR and World Rally Championship content, online races for up to 16 players, and a course generator. Its large roster included more than 1,000 cars.

A common mix-up is Gran Turismo 6, which arrived later and refined several systems but did not introduce dynamic time and weather to the series. Gran Turismo Sport also included weather-related features, yet its later release means it cannot be the first. In GT5, weather and time changes were available only on certain circuits and events rather than universally.
