Which Gran Turismo game first included a Livery Editor?

The story behind the answer

Gran Turismo Sport was the first Gran Turismo game to include a Livery Editor. The feature lets players customize a car’s visual identity by applying colors, patterns, decals and other graphical elements, making personalization a major part of the series’ modern presentation.

Its arrival reflected a broader shift in Gran Turismo Sport toward online competition and community expression. Players could create designs inspired by real racing liveries, fictional sponsors, national colors or personal branding, then share them with other players. This made the game’s car collection feel less static than in earlier entries.

The Livery Editor is often confused with older paint or customization options. Earlier Gran Turismo titles allowed certain color changes, wheel modifications or performance tuning, but they did not provide the same broad, integrated livery-design system. Gran Turismo 7 retained and expanded the idea, so the editor is now associated with the series even though Sport introduced it.
