Which governing body oversees Formula 1?

The story behind the answer

The FIA, or Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, oversees Formula 1. It is the sport’s governing body, responsible for administering the championship and setting its sporting, technical and financial regulations.

Founded in 1904, the FIA is an international federation for automobile organisations and motor sport. Its authority extends well beyond Formula 1 to championships such as the World Rally Championship, Formula E and Formula 2. In Formula 1, it also licenses drivers, officials, teams and circuits.

The FIA should not be confused with Formula 1 itself. Formula 1 is the commercial and sporting championship promoted by Formula One Management and organised with participating teams and race organisers; the FIA supplies the regulatory framework and officiating authority. UEFA governs European football, the IOC oversees the Olympic movement, and FIM governs motorcycle sport.
