Which Gothic cathedral in Germany has the largest twin spires of any church in the world?

The story behind the answer

Cologne Cathedral is the Gothic cathedral in Germany whose twin spires make it the world’s tallest twin-spired church.

Located beside the Rhine in Cologne, the cathedral is officially dedicated to Saint Peter. Its two enormous spires rise to about 157 metres, creating one of the most recognisable skylines in Europe. The structure is also renowned for having the world’s largest church façade and for its elaborate Gothic stonework.

Construction began in 1248, partly to provide a grand setting for the Shrine of the Three Kings, which is traditionally associated with the Magi. Work slowed and eventually stopped around the 16th century, leaving the medieval design unfinished for centuries. Construction resumed in the 19th century, and the cathedral was completed according to the original plans in 1880.

Cologne Cathedral is often confused with Ulm Minster because Ulm has the world’s tallest church tower. That is a different record: Cologne’s distinction concerns a church with two spires. The cathedral became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and remains an active Catholic place of worship.
