What is the name of the famous Parisian cathedral that burned in 2019?

The story behind the answer

The famous Parisian cathedral that burned in 2019 was Notre-Dame de Paris.

Located on the Île de la Cité in the Seine, Notre-Dame is a medieval Catholic cathedral and one of France’s best-known Gothic monuments. Construction began in 1163 during the reign of Louis VII, and the main structure was substantially completed by the mid-13th century. Its flying buttresses, rib vaults, rose windows, and twin western towers became defining features of Gothic architecture.

On 15 April 2019, a fire began in the roof space during renovation work. The blaze destroyed the wooden roof framework and the 19th-century spire, while firefighters saved much of the façade, towers, artworks, and stone vaulting. The fire prompted an international restoration effort, and the cathedral reopened to visitors and worshippers in December 2024.

A common mix-up is confusing Notre-Dame with the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, or Sacré-Cœur, which is another famous Paris landmark but was not the building damaged in the 2019 fire.
