Which castle in Romania is often associated with the legend of Dracula?
Answer
Bran Castle
Answer
Bran Castle
Bran Castle in Romania is the castle most often associated with the legend of Dracula. It stands near Bran, about 25 kilometres southwest of Brașov, in the Transylvania region.
The medieval fortress was built by Saxons in 1377 after King Louis I of Hungary granted them permission to construct it. Its position near a mountain pass gave it military and customs-control importance. Today, the castle is also known for displaying art and furniture connected with Queen Marie of Romania.
The Dracula connection is much stronger in popular culture than in historical evidence. Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel does not name Bran Castle, and there is no proof that Stoker visited it or even knew of it. The castle’s dramatic setting and its location in Transylvania helped make it a powerful tourist symbol for the fictional vampire.
Another common misconception is that Vlad the Impaler lived at Bran Castle. Most historians conclude that Vlad III Dracula never resided there and that the castle was not under his rule. His nickname and reputation may have influenced Stoker’s use of the name Dracula, but Bran Castle is primarily a real Romanian fortress later marketed as “Dracula’s Castle.”
