Bar-headed goose
Answer
Bar-headed goose
The bar-headed goose is famous for migrating over the Himalayas, sometimes flying above 7,000 metres.
It breeds in Central Asia and migrates south to wintering areas in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Its route crosses some of the world’s highest mountain ranges, making it one of the best-known examples of high-altitude bird migration.
The bird’s name refers to the two dark bars on its white head. Researchers have found that it has adaptations for thin air, including efficient oxygen use and unusually effective lungs. Strong winds and route choice also affect how high individual geese fly.
A common mix-up is assuming every flock crosses the highest peaks at the same altitude. In reality, height varies with weather, terrain and the birds’ route; some flights follow lower mountain passes.
