DeepMind created the AlphaFold protein-structure prediction system.
DeepMind, founded in London in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014, developed AlphaFold as an artificial-intelligence system for predicting the three-dimensional shapes of proteins from their amino-acid sequences. AlphaFold2 achieved a major breakthrough at the 2020 CASP assessment.
In 2022, DeepMind released structures for more than 200 million proteins through the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database, created with EMBL-EBI. The work has been important for structural biology, drug research, and understanding biological molecules.
Google Brain was another Google AI research group, but it was not the division best known for AlphaFold. DeepMind and Google Brain were combined into Google DeepMind in 2023, after AlphaFold had already become a signature DeepMind project.
