Which golfer won consecutive Masters titles in 1989 and 1990?

The story behind the answer

Nick Faldo won consecutive Masters titles in 1989 and 1990. He became only the second player to successfully defend the Masters, following Jack Nicklaus’s back-to-back victories in 1965 and 1966.

Faldo’s 1989 victory came in a sudden-death playoff against Scott Hoch. After Hoch missed a short putt on the first extra hole, Faldo made birdie on the second. In 1990, Faldo again needed a playoff, defeating Raymond Floyd after Floyd found water on the 11th hole.

The Englishman ultimately won three green jackets: 1989, 1990 and 1996. His first two Masters victories are sometimes confused with Sandy Lyle’s 1988 win or Ian Woosnam’s 1991 title, but neither player defended a Masters championship successfully.

Only three golfers have won consecutive Masters titles: Nicklaus, Faldo and Tiger Woods, who repeated in 2001 and 2002. Faldo’s 1990 triumph also completed a remarkable stretch in which he won two Masters and two Open Championships between 1987 and 1992.
